Irish Goodbye, Brian Kelly off to LSU.

I was about to write a game recap for the Stanford game, but some other news from South Bend trumped that.

Yup. That tweet isn’t fake. From what it sounds like, Brian Kelly is heading to LSU. He’s leaving as the winningest coach in Notre Dame history, with a team that still has a great shot at reaching the playoffs this year. I have two guesses as to why he would leave. First (and big one), money talks. He wasn’t getting paid much at Notre Dame and LSU is probably throwing the bank at him. Second, he may have felt that he hit his ceiling in South Bend. Also understandable, but the next two classes coming are both top 10 in the country so no time was better to win it all.

College football is cutthroat and we saw him do the same thing to Cincinnati, although I figured Notre Dame was a last stop for many (if not all) coaches. Notre Dame is in an outstanding spot right now, so they need to get the right guy to replace Kelly. The list is simple. Go after Luke Fickell at Cincinnati, Matt Campbell at Iowa State or promote Marcus Freeman. I would be happy with any three of those moves, with Freeman being the preferred move. Notre Dame is bigger than one person. It sucks to lose a coach like Kelly but the Irish will be just fine.
